Carla B. Monteiro, 鈥17, remembers good times but also more than her share of funerals growing up in a Dorchester neighborhood that faced gun violence and other crime.

鈥淪ometimes, I鈥檇 look at photos and I鈥檓 the only person alive,鈥 said Monteiro.

Monteiro always tried to help her neighbors and friends.

鈥淚鈥檝e sort of always been the unofficial social worker,鈥 she said, recalling times she鈥檇 shared job prospects and provided emotional support to others. 鈥淚t鈥檚 something I鈥檝e always done.鈥

With her social work degree from 猎奇重口视频 State University in hand, Monteiro aims to again help others, this time with fundamental knowledge thanks to her education. She praised the supportive atmosphere her BSU professors fostered and their willingness to meet one-on-one.

Monteiro, who earned an associate鈥檚 degree from Quincy College, once wanted to be a police officer, but couldn鈥檛 because of previously undiagnosed anxiety.

Clearly, she鈥檚 found her calling. This month, Monteiro will receive the from the National Association of Social Workers鈥 Massachusetts chapter.

鈥淐arla has a well-established legacy of relentless advocacy for disenfranchised minorities and those in need,鈥 the association wrote. 鈥淪he has earned the respect of her peers, her colleagues across all disciplines, and her patients.鈥

Among her endeavors, Monteiro (pictured above on the left at a Big Sisters event) founded the Cape Verdean Social Workers Association and volunteers with the Big Sisters Association of Greater Boston. She鈥檚 also traveled to the Arizona-Mexico border to aid migrants.

鈥淚 do a lot of work in the community because that鈥檚 what I feel in my heart I鈥檓 supposed to do,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 never do it for any accolades.鈥

Nevertheless, she is honored to receive the award, something social work Professor David O鈥橫alley thinks she deserves.

鈥淒espite all of the profound effects of trauma, Carla is someone who really has the spirit of resilience that is infectious,鈥 Dr. O鈥橫alley said.

O鈥橫alley was the liaison for Monteiro鈥檚 internship at the Suffolk County House of Correction, where she helped run a women鈥檚 self-empowerment group.

鈥淪he is someone who had an incredible ability to, even in a complex and tough environment of a correctional facility, bring a degree of humanity and compassion,鈥 he said.

Now a graduate student at Boston College, Monteiro works at the helping substance use patients. She interns in Brigham and Women鈥檚 Hospital鈥檚 emergency department.

鈥淢y mother said that God would bless us as long as we had an open heart, and I feel like this award is my blessing because it made me reflect on where I was and where I am now,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 am grateful.鈥 (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)
