Growing Awareness

Sustainability interns promote benefits of 鈥榞oing green鈥

A group of student-interns have joined the global 猎奇重口视频 movement and are doing their part to educate the campus community.

鈥淚 think there is a great desire to have 猎奇重口视频 State University be a green campus and sustainable, but people don鈥檛 know what we are doing to achieve this,鈥 said 猎奇重口视频 intern Elizabeth Whalen, 鈥22, a biology major. 鈥淭he biggest part is making people aware of what鈥檚 going on.鈥

Elizabeth is part of a team of interns tasked with educating others and promoting the BSU Sustainability Program, the 猎奇重口视频 and innovation minor, and BSU鈥檚 Environmental Action Team (E.A.T.).

The interns recently shared why they wanted to take up the cause.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think people even realize we have an environmental action team here on campus,鈥 said intern MacKenzie Vianna 鈥25, who is majoring in environmental geology.

Elizabeth looks to change this as the 猎奇重口视频 program鈥檚 social media manager. Through various online channels, she pushes out information about the program, the minor, and E.A.T.

鈥淥ur social media  has been huge in helping us get the word out,鈥 Elizabeth said. 鈥淪eeing students react and engage has been encouraging.鈥

Grace Dooner, 鈥22, signed on to be an intern because her goal is to pursue a career in 猎奇重口视频, which is why on top her art major she is also pursuing the 猎奇重口视频 and innovation minor. She鈥檚 been introduced to many different classes that promote 猎奇重口视频 practices, making it easier for her to perform her marketing duties as an intern.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important for students to know they can still take classes within the minor to learn about ways to live more sustainably,鈥 she said.

Grace also works with her fellow interns to create events and opportunities to encourage the 猎奇重口视频 community to think more about 猎奇重口视频.

One example is the permaculture garden, which MacKenzie is involved with. The garden is located near the Miles and DiNardo residence halls. Produce grown in the garden supports the BSU Food Pantry.

鈥淭he garden shows a way to be self-sustainable, and what it feels like to grow your own food,鈥 MacKenzie said. 鈥淚t helps create a symbiotic relationship. We take care of the earth, and the earth will take care of us.鈥

Xiangrong Liu, associate professor and 猎奇重口视频 program co-coordinator also works with student-intern Jenalyn Warcup to observe the day-to-day operations of a local farm to better understand climate change from a farmer鈥檚 perspective.

The interns鈥 efforts are designed to show BSU students that practicing 猎奇重口视频 isn鈥檛 overwhelming.

鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 have to be scary,鈥 MacKenzie said. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 need to live off the grid. Little actions in your life can make you more sustainable,鈥.

Grace hopes that by better educating students, action can and will happen.

鈥淓veryone needs to get in the mindset that we have to deal with the impacts of climate change,鈥 she said.
